Lady Wolves romp past East Central

DECATUR – Guard Chanta Poole poured in 21 points and the Co-Lin Lady Wolves howled to an 80-70 Thursday night win over the East Central Community College Lady Warriors in South Division action. Center LaVasha Allen chipped in 13 points as Co-Lin improved its record to 18-3 overall and 9-1 in the South.

In the men’s game, East Central beat the Wolves 85-78 in overtime.

Co-Lin plays a South Division twinbill at Hinds-Utica Monday night.

The Lady Wolves shot 45 percent from the field.

“We were able to survive the first half,” said Co-Lin women’s coach Gwyn Young. Sophomore forward Vintrice Briggs suffered a sprained ankle in the first half and sat out the second half.

“We were able to make East Central turn the ball over in the second half and we got some easy baskets,” said Young. “Two of our post players got in early foul trouble.”

Tiffany Sims made 7 steals and 6 assists in the victory. Poole made 8 assists.

The Wolves (4-17, 2-9) got 15 points each from Fred Fairman and Chris Steverson. Terance James chipped in 13 points and 10 rebounds. Jay Case scored 10 points/ Joseph Cunningham made 7 assists.

The Warriors outscored Co-Lin 14-7 in overtime. They had battled to a 71-71 deadlock at the end of regulation.

Co-Lin was a cold 3-for-19 from 3-point range. Overall, the Wolves shot 40 percent from the field. They made 19 of 28 from the charity line.

East Central got 23 points from Aquill Bahynard. Chris Rhoney added 19 points and Tejiminon Leatherwood 16. Walter Evans had 10 points as the Warriors made 30 of 39 free throws.
