Memorial services for Lucile Redd Leggett of Columbia were 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 19, at Hathorn Funeral Home in Columbia, with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery. Dr. Bryant Barnes, her pastor, will officiate, assisted by Dr. Paul Robertson of Houston, her nephew-in-law.

Mrs. Leggett, 84, died Feb. 16, 2013, at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg. She was born on Dec. 1, 1928, to the late Samuel Jefferson Redd and Ada Smith Redd of Brookhaven. Her father was a cattle farmer and her mother a teacher. Mrs. Leggett was the youngest of four children.

She was married to the late Albert Ray Leggett, her husband for 56 years, and they lived in the same house for 53 years.

Mrs. Leggett earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Mississippi College and went on to teach for 38 years in public schools in Meadville, Brookhaven, Columbia and Dexter, as well as Columbia Academy. She was an English teacher who worked to share her joy of Shakespeare and other literary giants with her students. Her lessons often weaved in Scripture quotations.

Her home in Columbia was always open to crowds of neighborhood kids – a better way to keep an eye on her own two, she said. When not at home, she was the First Baptist Church in Columbia, where she taught Sunday school. Her Bible is a record of notes taken from pastors, evangelists, seminary professors and famous preachers who preached and taught there.

Preceding her in death were her parents and husband.

Survivors are her son, Mark Leggett and wife, Cathy, of Ridgeland; daughter, Laura DuBose and husband, Bill, of Houston; grandchildren, Adam Leggett and wife, Kim of Austin, Texas, and Rachel King and husband, Steven, of Clinton, and Skyler DuBose of Hattiesburg and Kaitlyn DuBose of Houston; and brother, Ralph Redd and wife, LaNeil, of Mandeville, La.
