BA Cougars sweep Benton

Brookhaven Academy survived gusting winds and rain to sweep Benton Academy’s Rebels Monday night in season-opening baseball action. The Cougars won the opener 6-5 and the nightcap 7-1 in 5 innings at Harold Williams Ballpark.

“We were really proud to get those first two wins of the season,” said BA coach Casey Edwards. “We were minus three soccer players and three basketball players,” who are involved in the state playoffs in their respective sports.

Edwards said his team will resume play Feb.25, hosting Silliman Institute. The junior varsity starts at 4:30 followed by the varsity at 6:30.

BA 6, Benton 5

Steven Williams started for the Cougars. In 4.2 innings. Williams gave up 3 runs, 2 earned; fanned 6 batters and walked 2.

Williams was relieved by Duncan Bane in the fifth. He gave up 2 earns runs. He walked 3 and fanned 2.

Michael Fiorella finished the game. In two-thirds of an inning, he walked 2 batters.

The Cougars scored their sixth run in the bottom of the fifth. Tanner Parvin had 2 hits in the victory.

BA 7, Benton 1

Senior Tanner Parvin (1-0) pitched the rain-shortened victory. He gave up 1 earned run on 3 hits. He fanned 3 and walked 1 on 50 pitches.

Williams hit a solo home run in BA’s 7-run, second inning rally that began with 2 batters retired. Landon Nettles hit a 2-run double.
