Collins wows NFL Combine

What Jamie Collins did Monday at the NFL Combine will be talked about for years. The 6-foot-4, 250-pound Quentin native made a name for himself and broke records, too. NFL owners, coaches, and scouts in attendance dropped their jaws in amazement.

“That was the plan to have a good workout,” said Collins. “I’ve been training good at API in Gulf Breeze, Florida, for the combine and I’m going back to work on getting better for my Pro Day.”

Collins put on a freakishly amazing show at the Scouting Combine with some unreal numbers. He started off the day by recording a 4.59 in the 40-yard dash, which was among one of the best times at the linebacker position.

Immediately after making a good first impression, Collins nearly leaped out of the building with his broad jump of 11-feet, 7-inches. The broad jump set a combine record, a mark formerly held by Lions wide-out Calvin Johnson.

“I was just trying to do my best at each drill, added a soft-spoken Collins. “We were supposed to do the vertical right after the broad jump but we ended up running the 40 and cone drills and we did the vert last.”

Collins showed off his explosive power one last time in the vertical jump when he leaped 41.5 inches, just one inch shy of the combine record. The mark is the highest by any linebacker in the history of the combine.

His wingspan (arm-length) of 33-3/4 inches was the best among linebackers at the event. His broad jump became an instant youtube.com hit in mere seconds.

What many NFL teams found out about Collins and his skills in Indianapolis this week, many in Franklin County already knew. Still his performance was indeed legendary.

“He’s amazing,” said Rickey O’Quinn who coached Collins in football and basketball at Franklin County from 2006-2009. “I’m not surprised he did what he did up there. He’s that type of athlete. He’s a freak.”

Collins will have to show off the same skill sets at his Pro Day on March 8, at Southern Miss, when the whole world will be watching for an encore.

The NFL Draft is set for April 25-27, and all 32 teams are in play for Collins. His stock among draft boards is rising.
