Jackson Prep ousts BA Cougars

CLINTON – Senior center Josh Williams pumped in a game-high 13 points to lead three players in double figures as the Jackson Prep Patriots eliminated the Brookhaven Academy Cougars 58-31 Wednesday night in the second round of the MAIS Overall Tournament in A.E. Wood Coliseum on the Mississippi College campus.
“This was a tough game,” said Jackson Prep coach David Horne. “Brookhaven is a tough, well-coached team. They make it tough for any team to score points. Our boys had to earn everything to advance to next round.”
In the other boys game, Marshall Academy thumped Cenla Christian School 68-48.
In the girls bracket, Starkville Academy destroyed Prairie View Academy 71-29 and Bowling Green Academy cruised past Tri-County Academy 61-33.
The Cougars conclude their 2012-13 season with a 26-14 record.
The MAIS Overall Tournament resumes action Friday. The girls tip off the semifinals at 1 and 2:15 p.m. Starkville Academy battles Bowling Green and Presbyterian Christian entertains Leake Academy.
In the boys semifinals, Central Private tangles with Parklane at 6 p.m. Marshall Academy faces Jackson Prep.
Jackson Prep 58, BA 31
In a battle of AA vs. AAA, the BA Cougars and the Jackson Prep Patriots fought back and forth in a tough, physical contest. The Cougars managed to slow down the Patriot’s fast- paced offense in the first quarter, but Prep seized control to take a 14-9 lead.
In the second quarter, the Cougars kept the Patriots close. Jackson Prep led 27-20 at halftime.
In the second half, the Patriots (34-3) came out and overpowered the Cougars with their depth and outscored BA 31-11 to claim the win.
Senior guard Matthew Evans was the offensive leader for the Cougars with 10 points. Senior forward Gage Posey led on the boards with 6 rebounds.
“The guys played really good in the first half,” said BA coach Dale Watts. “We were up against a talented and very athletic team, but we had the team that could beat them.
“In the second half, Jackson Prep came out with vengeance,” stated Watts. “They managed to take us out of our game plan early with some quick transition baskets and made it tough for us to rally back.”
Senior forward Richard Baird contributed 11 points to help lead the Patriots. Ryan Buchanan netted 10 points. Michael Lewis and Buchanan were the leaders on the boards with 5 rebounds apiece.
“I am very pleased with my boys effort,” continued Horne. “After a close first half, our guys came out and met the challenge in the second half. We played a lot smarter on defense and eliminated our mistakes against Brookhaven to create turnovers and some quick offensive baskets.”
Marshall 68, Cenla 48
Brad Bennett directed Marshall with a game-high 21 points. Dakota Daily provided 15 points and Peyton Lewis had 13.
Kyhlnd Joiner led Cenla with 13 points.
Starkville 71, View 29
Starkville had three players score in double-digits. Maggie Proffitt led the onslaught with 19 points. Janieca Pigs contributed 12 points and Anna Lea Little had 10.
Victoria Simmon was the top scorer for Praire View with 8 points.
Bowling Green 61, Tri County 33
Mackayla Dykes was the offensive leader for the Lady Bucs with 18 points. Kristina Jerrell netted 13 points and Caroline Haik chipped in 10 points.
Bailey Randall paced Prairie View’s offense with 14 points.
