Brookhaven drops two in tournament

Brookhaven’s Panthers absorbed a pair of setbacks in the Mid-Mississippi Baseball Challenge. They lost a 12-7 decision to the Ridgeland Titans and fell 13-5 to Davidson of Mobile, Ala.

The Panthers (2-6), coached by Randy Spring, resume play Tuesday, hosting the McComb Tigers for a Class 5A region test. Junior varsity action starts at 5 p.m. on Moyer Field, followed by the varsity at 7.

The Panthers used a 4-run fourth to lead 4-3 but the Titans responded with 3 runs in the bottom of the inning.

Ole Brook finished with 8 hits. Houston Case homered. Brett Spring had 2 hits. Andrew Culver, Peyton Clark, Zach Smith, Genoa Sartin and Reed Jones singled. Case drove in 3 runs.

On the mound, Panther pitchers allowed 13 hits. Clark started and was replaced by Case in the second inning. Jones followed Case in the third and finished the game, absorbing the loss.

Davidson 13, Brook 5

In a format featuring Mississippi versus out-of-state teams, the Panthers encountered a strong squad from Mobile. The winners outhit Brookhaven 14-7.

Case doubled and singled, driving in 3 runs for BHS. Spring and Culver also doubled. Smith, Sartin and Landon McCullough also hit safely.

Davidson claimed a 5-zip lead after 2 innings. The Panthers scored 3 runs in the third and 2 more in the fourth, reducing their deficit to 8-5.

On the mound, Myles Tipton started for BHS and went 1.2 innings, giving up 6 runs, 5 earned, on 6 hits.

Culver (2K, 1BB) hurled 2 innings of relief. He allowed 5 runs, 1 of them earned, on 4 hits.

McCullough (0K, 2BB) finished the game, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits.
