Lady Hornets grab tournament crown

On a blustery, cold day in March, the Loyd Star Lady Hornets were victorious in Saturday’s Lincoln County softball tournament at Loyd Star and were crowned Lincoln County Champs.
The Lady Hornets edged the Bogue Chitto Lady Cats in the championship finals 7-6. In the opener, the Lady Hornets blasted the Enterprise Lady Yellow Jackets 9-1.
“Good to get the wins,” said Loyd Star coach Jan Delaughter. “I am proud of my girls. They played really well defensively and hit the ball. Both of my pitchers did a good job pitching.”
In other tournament action, BC surpassed the West Lincoln Lady Bears 4-2. In the consolation game, the Lady Bears roared past the Lady Jackets 13-7.
The Lady Hornets (4-5) resume play Monday at West Lincoln to battle the Lady Bears (3-3). Junior varsity action begins at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 6.
The Lady Cats (2-1) visit Walthall County to face the Salem Lady Wildcats. Junior varsity action begins at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 6.
The Lady Jackets (0-4) begin Region 7-2A play Tuesday. They host the Bassfield Lady Yellowjackets. Junior varsity begins at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 6.
Loyd Star 7, Bo. Chitto 6
The Lady Hornets and Lady Cats battled back and forth through the blistering cold. Loyd Star managed to push across the winning run in the fourth inning on a time limit format.
MacKenzie Smith (0K, 1BB) was the winning pitcher for the Lady Hornets. Rheagan Welch (0K,0BB) suffered the loss for BC. Christian Black (4K, 4BB) started for the Lady Cats.
Loyd Star’s offense was lad by singles from Julie Smith, Lexie Butler, Hannah Smith, Anna Grace Cupit and Haley Smith.
Centerfielder Mallory Allen was the offensive leader for the Lady Cats with two singles. Alexis Givens ripped a double. Hitting safely were Colby Kirkland, Mattie Avants, Alana Nettles and Welch.
“The girls played really well on a very cold day,” said BC coach Scott Leggett. “I kind of expected this. We just got our starters from basketball and it showed in our pitching and hitting. Overall, I was very pleased with the girls efforts.”
Loyd Star 9, Enterprise 1
The Lady Hornets and Lady Jackets opened the tournament as snow flurries floated down. Loyd Star quickly took care of business and hammered Enterprise in three innings of action.
Kelsey McCullough (3K, 0BB) tossed the win for Loyd Star. Jana Nations (0K, 7BB) absorbed the setback for Enterprise.
First baseman Ali Gartman directed the Lady Hornets at the plate with a double. Haley Smith, Hannah Smith and Anna Grace Cupit hit safely.
Skylar Dahlin led the Lady Jackets with two singles. Kristin Jergins hit a single.
“We are a very young and inexperienced team,” said Enterprise coach Ashley Jones. “We have a lot of areas to improve on, but my girls are working hard to steadily improve. This is a good learning experience for them and hopefully it will help us get ready for district.”
Bo. Chitto 4, W. Lincoln 2
The Lady Cats and Lady Bears kicked off their rivalry as softball fans watched the teams fight in a close game. BC scored one run in each inning to defeat West Lincoln in five innings of action.
Welch (0K, 0BB) was the winning pitcher for BC. Mallori Hall (4K, 4BB) suffered the setback for West Lincoln.
Second baseman Daley Roberts paced the Lady Cats with three singles. Alexis Givens ripped a double. Mallory Allen and Mattie Avants hit safely.
Heather Moak led the Lady Bears at the plate with a double. Hitting safely were Bentley Sills, Peyton White and Hall.
W. Lincoln 13, Enterprise 7
The Lady Bears exploded for eight runs in the second inning for an 11-4 lead over the Lady Jackets and held on for the win.
Hall (2K, 2BB) tossed the win for West Lincoln. Haley Nations (0K, 2BB) absorbed the setback.
First baseman Bentley Sills directed the offensive onslaught with three triples. Brianna Fauver contributed two doubles and a single. Layton Sills provided a double and a single. Destiny Allen ripped a double. Hitting safely were Hanna Moak, Karley Smith, White and Hall.
Jana Nations directed the Lady Jackets’ offense with a double. Carlee Nations, Kristin Jergins, Courtney Greer and Samantha Stewart hit safely.
