Jackets jump on W. Lincoln

MONTICELLO – Senior Dylan Smith provided a strong pitching performance, striking out nine batters and allowing only one walk in six inning of work as the Enterprise Yellow Jackets stung the West Lincoln Bears 10-2 Friday in Lawrence County’s Southwest Mississippi Spring Break Invitational.

“Glad to get the win,” said Enterprise coach Cass Brister. “Dylan (Smith) did a great job on the mound for us. The guys gave a good effort and played ball.”

The Jackets (7-3, 2-0) invade Bassfield Tuesday to battle their region foe the Bassfield Yellowjackets. Junior varsity action is at 4:30 p.m., followed by the varsity at 6:30.

Enterprise 10, W. Lincoln 2

The Bears (1-7) quickly struck first to open the contest by grabbing a 2-0 lead.

Enterprise answered in the bottom of the first inning and secured a 3-2 lead.

The Jackets and Bears battled back and forth in a defensive bout in the second and third innings, before Enterprise managed to catch fire in the fourth, fifth and sixth to end the game on an 8-run mercy rule.

Junior shortstop Jackson Cole was the offensive spark for the Jackets with a double and three singles. Reese Bracato contributed a pair of singles. Hitting safely were Josh Hardin, Max Miller and Hunter Waldrop.

“We started off a little shaky in the first inning, but we managed to pick up the tempo and played well,” stated Brister. “Overall, we played really well this week. Hopefully, these games will help us as we get ready for our district run.”

Pitcher Tanner Boutwell suffered the setback for the Bears with one strikeout and one walk. Jeremy Burns (1K, 0BB) saw action as a relief pitcher.

Senior center fielder Jared Case paced West Lincoln’s offense with a double and a single. Brady Wilson ripped a double. Lucas Burris, Alex Neal, Tyler Moak, Burns and Boutwell hit safely.

“We just did not show up to play,” said West Lincoln coach Steve Barrington. “We have got to find that team that shows up and performs really well in practice and carry that over into games.”

Barrington’s Bears committed 4 errors in the game.
