SUMMIT — The Co-Lin Lady Wolves won the opening game 1 7-4 Tuesday, then lost the nightcap 10-9 to archrival Southwest Mississippi Community College in extra innings.

Co-Lin now sits at 15-9-1 overall and 2-6 in the South Division. The Lady Wolves play a South Division twinbill at Hinds, March 26. They play a non-division doubleheader Thursday at East Mississippi in Scooba, starting at 1 p.m.

Co-Lin 17, Southwest 4

Freshman hurler Brooke Gonzales held the Lady Bears to 3 hits and 1 run through 6 innings in raising her record to 9-3, striking out 2 with one walk. Chynna Coghlan pitched the 7th, allowing 3 unearned runs on 3 hits.

Josie Porter homered, singled twice, stole 3 bases and scored 3 runs to lead the hitting attack. Kaitlin Moak added 3 singles and scored twice. Beth Fortenberry homered and singled.

Singling for Co-Lin were Kayla Craft, Gonzales, Missy Romero and Karla Beth Hux.

“We did a pretty good job of getting on base, but managed to leave 10 runners stranded,” said Co-Lin coach Allen Kent. “We must have better at-bats with runners in scoring position.

“Brooke did a good job of keeping (Lady Bears) in check,” Kent noted. “We let them back in it in the seventh with some shaky defense.”

Southwest 10, Co-Lin 9

Southwest took a 6-0 lead into the fifth, aided by a 2- run, 4-base error in the second. Meghan Johnson relieved Gonzales in the 4th with 2 out to end the inning.

In the fifth, Co-Lin’s Hannah Roberts walked and Kaitlin Moak was hit by a pitch. With one out, Porter walked and Kayla Craft delivered a 2-run single. Hux walked with one out, but the Lady Wolves left 2 more runners on base.

In the 6th, Kacie Berry homered and Roberts was hit by a pitch. Kaitlin Moak drove in a run on an error and Bradi Davis delivered an RBI single. Craft’s suicide squeeze scored Davis to tie the game at 6-6.

Co-Lin took a 7-6 lead in the 7th, but the Bears tied it in the bottom half.

“This was a tough one to lose, especially after the comeback we mounted,” aid Coach Kent. “Again, it came down to leaving runners stranded. In key situations, we have to do a better job of being selective. We left nine runners stranded in Game 2.”

Johnson suffered the loss, dropping her record to 4-5.

In extra innings, the Wolves plated a pair off of Hux’s 2-run single. In the bottom, a dribbler, an infield hit, 2 singles and a passed ball allowed the Bears to win the game.
