Lady Cobras zap Loyd Star

WESSON – Abbey Smith pitched a 5-hitter and the Wesson Lady Cobras exploded for 17 hits in a 12-1 Tuesday night rout of archrival Loyd Star in Region 6-2A softball action. Smith, an East Central Community College signee, struck out 3 batters and walked none in the 5-inning game.
Coach Jackie Johnson’s Lady Cobras (7-2, 2-0) erupted for 10, first-inning runs and Loyd Star never recovered. Ashton Newman singled twice and tripled. Marcie McQuage added a double and 2 singles. Bailey Middleton singled and double. Kayla Britt, Cheyenne Gladden and Smith singled twice. Sarah Robinson doubled. Taylor Smith and Hanna Brown singled.
Kelsie McCullough (1K, 1BB) was the losing pitcher.
Coach Jan Delaughter’s Lady Hornets(7-7,1-1) got a solo homer from Ali Gartman. Haley Smith singled twice. Abigail Thornton and Lexi Butler singled.
“Wesson played an excellent game,” said Delaughter. “We are not mentally prepared for the game and it showed.”
Junior Varsity Results
Wesson defeated Loyd Star 8-4 in the JV girls game as Mary Beth Munn pitched the win. Munn led her team’s attack with a single and a double. Aurianna Vaughn and Brooke Page singled.
Both teams face Region 6-2A foes Thursday. Wesson plays at Enterprise and Loyd Star hosts Bassfield.
