Welch strikes out 13; Lady Cats claw Brook

Bogue Chitto senior pitcher Rheagan Welch showcased a strong pitching performance Tuesday night, striking out 13-batters. She gave up four walks as the Bogue Chitto Lady Cats roared past the Brookhaven Lady Panthers 15-3 in softball action at the Ole Brook Softball Complex.

“Good job,” said BC coach Scott Leggett. “The girls came out and managed to get the key hits needed and put pressure on Brookhaven’s defense.”

The Lady Cats (7-3) return to action Thursday. They visit Vicksburg to battle a Region 7-1A foe, the St. Aloysius Lady Flashes for a varsity game only, starting at 5:30 p.m.

The Lady Panthers (3-3) also start their region 5A play on the road. They invade Ridgeland to tangle with the Ridgeland Lady Titans. Junior varsity kicks off at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity at 6:30.

Bogue Chitto 15, Brookhaven 3

In the second inning, BC broke up the scoreless game and pushed across two runs. In the bottom of the second inning, Ole Brook answered with one run.

In the third, sixth and seventh innings, the Lady Cats outscored Brookhaven 13-2 and coasted to the victory.

Brookhaven committed seven errors in the game. BC had three.

Senior catcher Adrienne Wallace provided the offensive spark for the Lady Cats with two triples and a single. Daley Roberts fueled the Flames with four singles. Mallory Allen ripped three single and Mattie Avants had a pair of singles. Alexis Givens, Colby Kirkland, Alana Nettles and Welch hit safely.

“Overall, I am proud of the girls effort,” continued Leggett. “We are starting to play our style of ball.”

Freshmen pitcher Katherine Shell suffered the setback for the Lady Panthers with four strikeouts and three walks.

Left fielder Katie Grace Culpepper paced Brookhaven’s offense with two singles. Shell contributed a triple. Hitting safely were Shelby Peavey, Taylor Murray, Shelby Case, Alyssa Speaks and Rileigh Allen

“We just did not show up to play,” said BHS coach Chad Walker. “When you commit errors and do not hit the ball, it is hard to win games.”

In JV action, Bogue Chitto defeated Brookhaven 8-3.

Alana Nettles was the winning pitcher for the Lady Cats with six strikeouts and three walks. Mary Parker Jackson absorbed the setback for the Lady Panthers with one strikeout and three walks.

Lauren McCaffery was the offensive leader for BC with a triple. Hitting safely were Brooke Myers, Reagan Kirkland and Rachel White.

Ole Brook was directed at the plate with a single by Destiny Trevillion.
