Lady Wolves sweep Hinds

RAYMOND – The Co-Lin Lady Wolves extended their winning streak to four as they swept a South Division doubleheader from the Hinds Lady Eagles 5-2 and 9-6. The Lady Wolves (19-9-1) travel to Jones County on Wednesday, April 3, for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.

Josie Porter reached on a fielder’s choice and stole second. Karla Beth Hux delivered an RBI double. Courtesy runner Beth Fortenbery scored on Missy Romero’s RBI single to left field. Bradi Davis delivered a 2-out RBI single to left to give the Lady Wolves a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

Hinds hit solo homeruns in the second and third innings, to trim the Lady Wolves lead to 3-2.

Neither team scored again until the seventh inning. Jaylee Fernandez reached on an error and Porter smashed a two-out two-run homerun to increase the Co-Lin lead to 5-2.

Brooke Gonzales (11-3) pitched a complete game to pick up the win. The freshman from Denham Springs scattered six hits, struck out six and walked none.

Porter’s double, two RBIs, and two stolen bases led the Lady Wolves at the plate. Romero and Davis had two hits each. Hux added support with a double.

Co-Lin 9, Hinds 6 (9 innings)

Hinds took an early 1-0 lead scoring an unearned run in the first inning.

The Lady Wolves scratched a run to tie the game in the second. Kayla Craft led off with a double to center and advanced to third on a passed ball. Kacie Berry’s RBI single to center plated Craft.

Co-Lin answered with a three-run fifth inning. Kaitlan Melton doubled to left and scored on Kaitlin Moak’s double to center. Porter reached on an infield single. Romero delivered a two-out two-run single to give the Lady Wolves a 4-3 lead.

The Lady Eagles tied the game at 5-all in the bottom of the seventh inning. Claire Richardson reached on an error and advanced to second on a passed ball. Hayley Irvin’s groundout advanced pinch runner Katty Neely to third base chasing reliever Meghan Johnson from the mound.

In the eighth inning tiebreaker, Romero sacrificed pinch runner Elizabeth Cliburn to third. With two outs, Mitchell delivered an RBI single to give the Lady Wolves a 6-5 lead.

In the ninth inning, Melton sacrificed Beth Fortenbery to third. Kaitlin Moak smoked an RBI single to right. With two outs, Karla Beth Hux smashed a towering two-run homerun to left to give the Lady Wolves a 9-6 lead.

Gonzales started the game and pitched the first five innings, allowing three earned runs, seven hits, striking out two and walking three. Johnson pitched 1.1 innings giving up one run, walking one, and hitting one batter. Gonzales (12-3) reentered the game and tossed the final 2.3 innings, allowing one hit.

At the plate, Romero’s three singles and two RBIs led the Lady Wolves. Hux hit a two-run homerun. Melton, Porter, and Craft each doubled and singled.
