Officials working on final items of interest

Incumbent aldermen hear their time left in office counting down.
Only about three months remain in the current terms of municipal officials, a timeline those aldermen invoked several times during their Tuesday night board meeting.
Specifically, Mayor Les Bumgarner is pushing to hire a code enforcement officer and Ward One Alderman Dorsey Cameron wants to see tornado sirens in Brookhaven.
Ward Six Alderman David Phillips heads a committee of aldermen working to put together an ordinance governing the powers granted to a code enforcement officer.
Once the ordinance is on the books, city leaders can move to fill the position. Money was allocated in the 2012-13 fiscal year budget for such an officer.
Phillips said the hire of the position may have to wait until new terms of city officials begin in July, but Bumgarner indicated he wants to see the position filled during his tenure.
Bumgarner is not seeking re-election.
In the same vein, Cameron asked about the status of a grant the city has received to assist in paying for weather sirens.
“I would like to see us get some sirens this term,” he said.
Bids for the sirens will be accepted until 2 p.m. April 12, and then opened at that time, Jinks told Cameron.
This is the second round of bidding for weather alert sirens. After initial bids were taken, all were rejected for failing to fulfill stated requirements.
Bumgarner has emphasized he also wants to see the weather sirens installed during his term as mayor.
Cameron echoed that sentiment.
“We need at least one,” Cameron said Tuesday night.
Come July, the board is guaranteed to look at least a little different. Ward Five Alderman D.W. Maxwell is seeking the mayor’s office, so a new elected official will be taking Maxwell’s current seat around the table.
Aside from Maxwell, all aldermen are seeking re-election to their current offices. All face opponents except Ward Two Alderman Terry Bates.
In other news, Phillips informed board members the initial meeting of a neighborhood watch for the Rogers Circle area will be held 6 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Wade Baptist Church.
He invited all residents of the area to attend the Thursday evening meeting.
Aldermen also met in executive session regarding contract negotiations and the airport. Following the executive session, aldermen voted to increase the rent of the airport’s Hangar 30 from $140 a month to $300 a month. The same motion set the rent of the soon to be completed Hangar One at $800 a month.
