Lady Cobras sack West Lincoln

     Senior Abbey Smith provided a solid performance on offense and defense to help lead the Wesson Lady Cobras to a 9-3 win over the West Lincoln Lady Bears Tuesday night in softball action at West Lincoln’s Cow Palace.

     “Glad to get the win,” said Wesson coach Jackie Johnson. “The girls played well offensively and defensively to get the victory.”

     The Lady Cobras (16-4, 8-0) won the Region 7-2A title and received an opening round bye. They will invade Bogue Chitto, Friday to battle the Lady Cats in a makeup game. The junior varsity game begins at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity  at 6.

     The Lady Bears (13-12, 4-2) return to action Saturday. They host the opening round of the Class 1A state playoffs. They entertain the Weir Lady Lion in a doubleheader or a tripleheader if necessary.

Wesson 9, W. Lincoln 3

     The Lady Cobras came out strong and overpowered West Lincoln to claim a 9-0 lead in four innings of action.

     West Lincoln answered Wesson’s challenge and fought hard to keep the contest going by pushing across one run in the fifth.

     In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Lady Bears tried to rally but only scored two runs.

     Abbey Smith was the winning pitcher for the Lady Cobras with three strikeouts, no walks and two hit batters.

     Malori Hall absorbed the setback for West Lincoln with one strikeout, four walks and one hit batter.

     Senior Abbey Smith showcased her skills at the plate to lead Wesson with a triple, a double and a single. Ashton Newman and Bailey Middleton contributed a double and a single apiece. Hitting safely were Kayla Britt, Macie McQuage and Taylor Smith.

     Catcher Layton Sills continued her hot hitting streak to direct the Lady Bears with two singles. Millane Lewis and Hall provided a double . Bentley Sills, Micah Redd and Karley Smith hit safely.

     “Defensively, we started off really good, but ran out of gas at the end,” said West Lincoln coach Andrew Redd. “The girls did a good job and played hard. Overall, we just need to learn to fight through our tiredness when we play multiple games.”

     Redd’s girls had won an extra-inning game against St. Al earlier in the day.
