At the request of American Railcar Industries, aldermen have approved the closure of a section of First Street.

The closure will begin at the intersection of West Behan and Boyce Drive and continue on up to the Industrial Park Road overpass.

A spur from the CN railroad line will curve and cross over First Street onto what will be the ARI plant location, said Public Works Director Steve Moreton.

WGK engineering will work in consultation with ARI to prepare for the installation of the rail spur.

Moreton said the area to be closed is a little-used street and the closure should adversely affect city residents.

“It’s not going to be anyone’s driveways that are going to impacted,” Moreton said.

Company officials hole the ARI repair plant, to be located on the site of the Homelite Jacobson building, will open in 2014, bringing about 30 news jobs to Brookhaven.

Bill Scott, current plant manager of the Bude plant, will be taking the reins of the Brookhaven plant. He personally appeared before aldermen Tuesday night.
