Lake ties series with Wesson Cobras

LAKE – The Lake Hornets defeated Wesson’s Cobras 5-1 Monday night and gained a 1-1 deadlock in the Class 2A state baseball playoff best-of-three series. The game was postponed from Sunday, due to rain.

The Cobras (21-6) won the series opener 9-4 Saturday. On Monday, they left 15 runners stranded on base. They host Lake tonight at 6 p.m.

On the mound, senior right-hander Alex Smith (7K, 4BB) and went the distance, absorbing the loss. He gave up 3 earned runs on 6 hits.

Lake’s Keifer Wolfe (5K, 4BB) tossed the complete-game victory. He gave up 8 hits and 1 earned run. He hit 2 batters.

The Cobras got 2 hits from Smith and Taylor Roberts. Quentin Munn doubled. Jase Alexander, Bailey Warren, and Austin Crow singled.

“We left a bunch of guys on base,” said Wesson coach Seth Lofton. “It’s tough when you leave that many guys on. We have to get after them tonight.”

Matt Mitchell hit a 2-run double for the Hornets. Jay Johnston singled twice. Wolf, Matt Ferguson and Kadarious McClendon singled, They scored twice in the sixth on Wesson’s only fielding error, a bad-hop single.

The Hornets took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first.
