Installation of tornado warning sirens in Brookhaven continues to move toward reality.

Area Civil Defense Director Clifford Galey appeared before city aldermen Tuesday night to request that they approve a notice to proceed on the project. The board voted in favor of the notice.

Galey said he’s working with Entergy on a plan to supply power to the sirens.

There may also be some additional good news; Galley is working to add a sixth siren to installation plans.

The sixth siren would be placed at the end of Brookway Boulevard and provide coverage to a small area of town west of Interstate 55 not covered by the other five sirens.

However, Galey said efforts to secure a sixth siren won’t hold up installation of the other five.

Tentatively, the five guaranteed sirens will be located at 906 Highway 51, at the end of East Washington Street, at the corner of Field Lark Lane and Industrial Park Road, at the corner of Fender Trail and Manufacturers Boulevard and at the corner of Monticello Street and North Jackson Street.

Over a year ago, the city was cleared to receive a FEMA grant to pay for most of the cost of installing five weather alert sirens in Brookhaven. The grant would cover 95 percent of project costs, up to a total of $117,600.

However, the selected bid by Precision Communications for the cost of the sirens and their installation came in below the project costs. The winning bid was $79,000.

Galey hopes he can secure the grant funds up to the promised maximum of 117,000 to buy the sixth siren.

Aldermen had previously discussed splitting the cost a sixth siren with the Lincoln County Board of Supervisors and placing it at Linbrook Business Park.

At that location, a siren would provide some coverage to some areas of the county adjacent to the city limits.

Supervisors never took to the idea, however.

It’s unclear when Galey might know more details about a sixth siren.
