The Mississippi Symphony Orchestra will be joining the Mississippi School of the Arts Chorale for a performance in Lampton Auditorium on MSA’s campus Friday night.

     The concert begins at 7 p.m. and is free to attend.

     “We will be performing two movements from Brahms’ Requiem together,” MSA Director of Music Patton Rice said.

     In addition to the joint performance, Rice explained that the two groups will present several works independently.

     The orchestra’s solo act includes works from Telemann, Debussy and Bizet under the direction of Conductor Crafton Beck. 

     The chorale will be performing a capella in remembrance of an MSA staff member who passed away this year.

     “We are dedicating that portion of the program to Darlene Powell,” Rice said.

     Several alumni will be joining the current students Friday night.

     Amy Corders is a 2008 MSA graduate currently enrolled under full scholarship in the master’s program at the San Francisco Conservatory.

     Corders will be performing a soprano solo in one of the movements.

     MSA graduate and Cincinnati Conservatory student Ezekiel McCall will be returning to sing bass at the performance.

     This is the third year that the two groups have collaborated and it coincides with MSA’s 10th anniversary.

     The event is sponsored by a grant from Entergy.

     “It’s beautiful music,” Rice said. “I have enjoyed our relationship with this symphony for years, especially because I sang with them before I came here to teach.”
