Ward One residents planning to participate in the upcoming runoff election by casting an absentee ballot don’t have much time left.

The Brookhaven City Clerk’s Office will remain open until noon on Saturday, May 18, for absentee votes to be cast in the office.

Absentee ballots that have been received from the clerk’s office by mail must be received back in the clerk’s post office box by 5 p.m. Monday, said City Clerk Mike Jinks.

The Ward One runoff election, between incumbent alderman Dorsey Cameron and challenger Randy Belcher, takes place Tuesday, May 21.

Polls will be open Tuesday from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. at the Ward One voting precinct, the Cloverdale Acres administration building.

Only Ward One residents may vote in the runoff.

The May 7 primary, Belcher earned the most number of votes out of a five-candidate field, with Cameron in second place. Belcher did not, however, receive more than 50 percent of the votes.

After the May 21 runoff, Brookhaven voters will next go to the polls June 4 for the general election.

However, there are no Republicans or independent candidates seeking the Ward One alderman’s post. Therefore, the winner of the May 18 runoff will become the next office holder in Ward One.
