Cox still leads in finance disclosures

    As candidates round the corner on the final weekend before Brookhaven’s municipal elections, Republican candidate Joe Cox once again appears to have the fundraising advantage in the mayor’s race.

     The most recent round of campaign finance reports were due to be turned in by May 28 at the city clerk’s office. The reports were to disclose campaign contributions and campaign spending during the period of April 28 through May 25, as well as giving contribution and spending totals for the year thus far.

     Cox reported total campaign contributions of $12,324.

     For the most recent reporting period, Cox indicated $1,472 in campaign spending. He gave no year to date spending totals.

     Independent mayoral candidate D.W. Maxwell reports having received no campaign contributions. He has spent $9,269 in total on his campaign.

     Rose “Polly” Powell, also an independent candidate for mayor, indicated contributions at $150 with total spending of $1,170.

     Democratic mayoral candidate David Smith III’s paperwork says that the contributions of $250 he received during the reporting period are all the contributions he has received. So far his campaign has spent $1,570.

     In the alderman at large race, Republican candidate and incumbent Karen Sullivan reported $4,847 of campaign costs with $800 in donations.

     Her Democratic opponent Andre’ Spiller reported campaign spending of $595 and campaign donations of $250 during the most recent reporting period.

     Independent Ed Thompson is moving along with no campaign donations, having spent a total of $4,994 during his campaign.

     Democratic Chief of Police candidate Bobby Bell has received $3,103 in campaign contributions and spent $1,341 on the campaign.

     His Republican opponent Ted Goleman reported $200 in contributions for the year with $237 in campaign expenses.

     According to his paperwork, Republican city clerk incumbent Mike Jinks has received  $1,275 in campaign donations.

     So far, he’s spent $1,185.

     His Democratic opponents Maxine Jones indicated no contributions and no periodic disbursement and expenses of $377.

     Ward Six has been a relatively low-money race.

     Democratic candidate David McCoy hasn’t received any contributions this year and during the most recent reporting period spent $765 on his campaign.

     David Phillips, the independent incumbent, indicated no contributions and had spent $676 on the campaign.
