With the inclusion of affidavit ballots, results from Tuesday’s municipal election in Monticello are official.

All preliminary leaders from Wednesday morning’s reports managed to hold onto victory despite some closely contested races.

Final numbers gave Mayor David H. Nichols 222 votes with an addition of four affidavit ballots.

Nichols’ two challengers, Bobby Herring and Scott Stormo, also received some extra votes, but not enough to oust the incumbent.

Herring’s final tally came to 163 and Stormo’s to 25.

Ward One will officially welcome a new alderman as Donald Walters’ total of 48 votes beat incumbent Jerry Goode’s 35.

Incumbent Ward Two Alderman Steven Moreman was able to garner two extra votes with the inclusion of affidavit ballots, making his tight margin of victory with challenger David Penny a little wider.

Moreman received 42 votes while Penny received 38.

In Ward Four, incumbent Alderman Kevin Garrett was able to fight off challenger Larry N. Smith to resume his position in City Hall.

Garret received 59 votes while Smith received 28.

Richard “Ricky” Sykes will officially take over as alderman for Ward Five after defeating incumbent Craig “Bowie” Davis.

Sykes received 76 votes to Davis’ 57.

Ward Three Alderman Martha Watts was the only candidate to run unopposed but received 31 votes in the election.
