Music invades Brookhaven this Saturday, as the annual Brookstock event rolls around once again.

Don Jacobs, the coordinator of the gathering, said Brookstock started with just his high school band, the Brutes, at a reunion in 1998. At that time, they had not played together for 30 years.

“I had the idea to get my band together for nostalgic reasons,” he said. “We actually never sounded better.”

He said The Rooks, a rival band in high school, will return this year, also. Jacobs said generally bigger crowds come when Edward Tree, a member of The Rooks, is in town.

Tree, who changed his name when he moved to Los Angeles, was originally Ed Safley.

Other groups include Mike J. Case and Friends and Claus Burkard. Burkard, originally from Germany, will be flying in from the Philippines. He is a long-time record producer.

This year’s event will also feature CDs for sale from Brookstock four years ago. The CD features live performances by Jacobs, Tree, Virgil Brawley and Bryan Batson. The recordings will be on sale for $10.

Jacobs said Brookstock became annual when the participants realized that they only really got to see each other at funerals.

“I work hard at it, and it always seems to come too soon,” he said. “I have a blast.”

What started as a class reunion has become a community-wide event that Jacobs said even his 92-year-old mother attends.

“It’s a good opportunity to bring the community together,” he said.

The doors will open at 5 p.m. and music will begin at 7 at the Brookhaven Recreation Department. There is a $10 cover charge. Some food will be available to purchase, but attendees must bring their own beverages.
