Brookhaven School District Board members voted to adopt a limited tax note resolution to cover refurbishment and construction projects, including electrical repairs and new roofing.

     District accountant Susan Cochran said the three-mill note of $550,000 will not increase taxes. The resolution will take the place of another debt service.

     Members also voted to build a wooden fence in the outfield of the Brookhaven High School Complex. The Softball Boosters are funding the project.

     In other business, members approved Versie Rushing advertising for bids on two leases of 16th Section land if the current leasing agreements are not renegotiated. Included are sand and gravel leases and hunting and fishing leases.

     Superintendent Stephanie Henderson asked the board to approve her making revisions to the 2013-14 School Calendar.

     “After the original calendar was approved, I revised and made some modifications to keep us in compliance with accreditation,” said Henderson. She said she will remove early release dates for February and October and add one the last school day of December.

     The board approved a policy on use of school property to include language that covered how the school leased property to members of the community.

     They also approved a policy change of the Family Medical Leave Act to a cycle of 12 months instead of a 10-month cycle to include summer employees and medical or maternal leaves that occur during summer vacation.

     Cochran received board approval to purchase Sole Source software from School Status software company for $10,000.

     Cochran also obtained approval to advertise for bids on classroom supplies, janitorial supplies, electrical supplies, fire extinguisher services and dust mop services.

     She also received approval for disbursing $209,394 to Lincoln County Schools for 16th Section land they are leasing. She said the Brookhaven School District received $233,733 in revenues.

     In closing, Henderson shared with the board the accomplishments of dietary employees who received the 2013 Child Nutrition Best Practice award. Henderson said this was a great accomplishment.

     “This is a national award. This shows the outstanding practices of our staff in dietary,” Henderson said, “We commend Tonya McSweyn and her staff for having no violations after child nutrition officials made an on-site visit.”

     The board approved Henderson’s request for a special meeting at 6 p.m. on Aug. 6 for the purpose of adopting a sale resolution in regard to the issuance of the limited tax notes.
