Funeral services for Jewel Walker Davis of Brookhaven are 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, at New Sight Baptist Church, with burial in Rosehill Cemetery. Riverwood Family Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation is Friday from 5 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home and Saturday from 10 until 11 a.m. at the church.
Mrs. Davis, 99, died Aug. 4, 2013 at Haven Hall Health Care Center. She was born in Mississippi on March 7, 1914 to William Henry Walker and Katie Smith Walker.
She was a 1932 graduate of New Sight School and worked at Stahl Urban. She also worked in ladies wear at J.C. Penney, where she became known as “Mrs. Penney.” Mrs. Davis was a member of New Sight Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Joy Club. She loved her church, family, friends and gardening. She also loved singing and fellowship.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, John Kirby Davis; brothers, Herman Walker and Solon Walker; sisters-in-law, Ada Claire Walker, Ruth Davis and Carrie Mae Pippen and husband, Henry; and brothers-in-law, Malcolm Davis, Hemby Davis and Carroll Davis.
Survivors are her daughter, Kaye Hammond and husband, Danny; two grandchildren, Holly Hammond Grim and husband, Andy, of Hattiesburg, and John Andrew Hammond of Philadelphia and special friend, Sarah Gayden Harris; and four great-grandchildren, Andrew Walker Grim and Paxton Arrington Grim of Hattiesburg, and John Davis Hammond and Walter Andrew Hammond of Jackson.
Other family members include Ruth Walker of Brookhaven; sister-in-law, Gertrude Davis of Hattiesburg; nephews, Billy Walker and wife, Ondra, of Brookhaven, Jackson Walker and wife, Terrie, of Hattiesburg, and Carroll Davis of Pearl; nieces, Marsha Malone and husband, Robbie, of Pearl, Susan Jordan and husband, Mel, of Arkansas, Wanda Cooper and husband, Chuck, of North Carolina, Carolyn Randall of Tennessee and Nancy Pippen of Gulfport.
The family gives a special thank you to the staff of Haven Hall for all the love and care given, and to Hospice Compassus.
