A woman with local ties who was shot in a hostage standoff at Tensus State Bank in St. Joseph, La., Tuesday has died of her injuries, according to a close family member.

Betty Johnson of Brookhaven said her daughter Laura McDaniel’s mother-in-law, LaDean McDaniel, passed away at Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria, La., at noon today after being shot by gunman Fuaed Abdo Ahmed.

The standoff happened Tuesday when Ahmed took two female bank employees, and one male employee hostage at a small branch of Tensus State Bank near the Louisiana-Mississippi line.

The man grew increasingly erratic as negotiations went on, sometimes hanging up on police. One of his demands to authorities was that they get the device out of his head, Louisiana State Police superintendent Col. Mike Edmonson said, describing a disturbed young man.

One female hostage was released early in the day through negotiations and the help of a friend of Ahmed’s. But, near midnight Tuesday, Ahmed told negotiators he was going to shoot the other two hostages. McDaniel and fellow employee Jay Warbington were shot when police entered the building.

Ahmed was shot and killed by police.
