Three people were pronounced dead at the scene of an accident that occurred between 2 to 2:15 a.m. early Saturday off of Old Red Star Road in Copiah County, said Copiah County Coroner Ellis Stuart.

Two more persons were transported to the University Medical Center in Jackson, Stuart said. He was not able to provide information regarding their condition Saturday afternoon.

The pickup that the occupants were in ran off the road, hit a tree and was engulfed in flames, killing three of the five occupants, said Stuart. The cause of the accident was under investigation by the Copiah County Sheriff’s Department.

The coroner declined to release the names of the deceased.

The sheriff’s department was unavailable for information Saturday.
