Senior quarterback Fred Trevillion connected with his brother senior wide receiver Javontae Trevillion to score Brookhaven’s final two touchdowns in the last two minutes to help the Panthers stay undefeated on the season with a 19-13 comeback win over the North Pike Jaguars Friday night on King Field.

“Great defense game,” said BHS coach Tommy Clopton. “Our defense played great to keep us in the game. Offensively, we shot ourselves in the foot on many occasions throughout the game. Overall, I was very pleased with the guys for finding a way to win the game.”

In Brookhaven’s first home game of the season, football fans gathered and witnessed a thrilling smash-mouth defensive contest between the Panthers and Jaguars.

In the first quarter, North Pike and Brookhaven fought back-and-forth in a defensive bout as both teams struggled to get their offense going.

In the second quarter, the Panthers managed to break up the scoreless ballgame as Fred Trevillion hooked up with senior wide receiver Shuntez Smith for a 54-yard touchdown reception with 3:00 left. Brookhaven was unsuccessful on the extra-point attempt, but led 6-0 at halftime.

In the second halftime, the Panthers and Jaguars continued their defensive bout.

North Pike, finally managed to break through the Panthers’ strong defense to score their first touchdown in the third quarter, when senior running back Lakedric Lee sprinted 50-yards to paydirt with 8:14 remaining to give the Jaguars a 7-6 advantage. Tyler Vanderslice made one-of-two extra point attempts for North Pike.

In the fourth quarter, the Jaguars’ defense cashed in a huge touchdown to help increase their lead over Brookhaven. Senior corner back Dalwin Henderson intercepted a pass and returned it 40 yards for the touchdown. The Panthers blocked the extra-point attempt as the Jags led 13-6 with 2:29 remaining.

Brookhaven answered North Pike’s challenge and quickly marched down the field late in the fourth. Fred Trevillion threw a 69-yard touchdown pass to Javontae Trevillion on BHS’s first scrimmage play with 2:00 remaining. Chris Calcote kicked the extra point to tie the game at 13-all.

In the closing minute, Brookhaven’s defense stepped up and stopped the Jaguars’ drive to get the ball back for a potential game-winning score.

With seconds remaining, the Panthers quickly went down the field after getting the ball back on North Pike’s 35-yard line. On the last play of the game as time expired, Fred Trevillion connected with Javontae Trevillion for a 32-yard touchdown strike.

“We played a really good team,” said North Pike coach Chris Smith. “We had a chance for the win, but came up short at the end.

“Brookhaven’s defense wore us down in the fourth quarter,” continued Smith. “We struggled to keep our drives alive with the Panthers’ tough defense. Their offense came up big at the end when they needed it.”

Fred Trevillion was Ole Brook’s offensive leader, completing 11 of 30 passes for 261 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.

Javontae Trevillion led all receivers with five catches for 145 yards. Smith contributed 118 yard on five receptions. Jermone Kelly directed the Panthers’ ground attack with 27 yards on 11 carries.

Lee paced the Jaguars’ offense with 76 yards rushing on 16 carries. Austin Smith directed the Jaguars’ aerial attack completing three of 17 passes for 36 yards. Jalen Jackson was the top receiver with two catches for 27 yards.

On defense, Brookhaven held North Pike to 158 yards total offense. Ty Hill led the Panthers with 10 tackles. Calcote provided eight stops.

Zerrian Pittman directed the Jags defense with seven tackles. Keldrick Dillion and Henderson contributed six stops each. Ladarius Dunn and Henderson intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble apiece.
