BOGUE CHITTO – Sophomore catcher Christian Black’s grand slam home run in the bottom of the sixth inning helped jolt the Bogue Chitto Lady Cats over the Lawrence County Lady Cougars 7-1 Tuesday night in slowpitch softball action.

“The girls did a good job,” said BC coach Scott Leggett. “The sixth inning was definitely the game changer. We managed to get clutch hits when we needed. Overall, both schools played really well defensively.”

The Lady Cats (8-3) begins district action Thursday, visiting Lumberton to battle the Lumberton Lady Panthers. Junior varsity begins at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 6.

The LCHS Lady Cougars (10-1-1, 2-0) return home to host district rivals, the North Pike Lady Jaguars, Thursday. Junior varsity begins at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 6.

Bogue Chitto 7, Lawrence Co. 1

The Lady Cats and Lady Cougars provided their softball fans with a strong defensive battle as both schools fought hard in a close ball game.

In the bottom of the first inning, BC got on the scoreboard first to take an early 1-0 lead.

At the top of the third inning, Lawrence County fought back to tie the contest at one all.

Both teams threatened on offense to claim a big lead on several occasions through the contest, but huge defensive plays by the opposing schools kept the game tied.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Lady Cats managed to break up the tied game and scored six runs to claim a 7-1 lead over the Lady Cougars.

In the seventh inning, Lawrence County worked hard to answer BC’s challenge by loading the bases but fell short at the end, as the Lady Cats recorded the final out.

Brooke Myers was the winning pitcher for Bogue Chitto with no strikeouts and one walk.

Berri Rogers suffered the setback for the Lady Cougars with no strikeouts and two walks.

Black was the offensive leader for the Lady Cats with a grand slam homerun and two singles. Mattie Avants contributed a pair of singles. Hitting safely were Mallory Allen, Alexis Givens, Jordan McKinney, Colby Kirkland, Alana Nettles and Marshonikique Blackwell.

Lawrence Count was led on offense by Jamie Martin, Ciera Horton, Lexie Johnson, Elizabeth Smith, Callie Fortenberry and Rogers with a single apiece.

“We did not play well offensively,” said LCHS Meleah Howard. “We need to get more productive on offense.”

In JV action, Lawrence County skinned Bogue Chitto 4-2.

Alyssa Lambert directed the Lady Cougars’ offense with two singles. Cheyenne Long, Emalee Gaffeny, Allyson Anderson, Tyranesha Davis and Josey Nations hit safely.

Marshonikique Blackwell paced the Lady Cats at the plate with a pair of singles. Hitting safely were Zarriah Matthew, Daley Roberts, Lauren McCaffrey and Lineka Newsom.
