WESSON – The rain fell early and often Friday night in Wesson as Copiah-Lincoln took on their rivals from Southwest Mississippi Community College in MACJC south division soccer action. The Lady Wolves (0-9-1, 0-4-1) would go to double overtime with the Lady Bears (0-7-1, 0-4-1) before the match ended in a 2-2 tie.

The Co-Lin (1-9, 0-5) men would take an early 1-0 lead over the Bears (1-6-1, 1-4) before Southwest would come back to take the match 4-1.

In the women’s game Southwest got on the board first with a Jessica St. Pierre goal at the 17:00 mark of the first half. Co-Lin would get the equalizing goal off the head of sophomore Caitlin Lofton. Lofton, a sophomore from Natchez, headed the ball in after a scramble in front of the Southwest net at the 25:00 mark of the first half.

With 5:56 left in the first half, the match was halted by a lightening delay. Rain fell constantly throughout the match and became torrential on and off as the night progressed. The Wesson area was drenched with over three inches of rain during the period from Friday afternoon to Saturday morning.

After the 20-minute lightening delay action picked back up and play was not stopped again. With 20 minutes remaining in regulation the Lady Wolves gained the lead when Daniela Orozco netted her first goal of the night. Orozco, a sophomore from Phoenix, Ariz., started the match as the Co-Lin goalkeeper before moving to the midfield early in the first half.

The Co-Lin lead would be short lived, eight minutes later the Lady Bears would tie the match at 2-2, on a goal by Nicole Daigle. Daigle’s goal was a perfect strike on a free kick that just beat the outstretched arm of Co-Lin goalkeeper Ashley Rice.

Rice would earn her scholarship in the first ten minute overtime period. Playing in a sometime blinding rain with soaking wet gloves, Rice stopped multiple Lady Bear shots from point blank range.

After no score in the first overtime the teams played a second ten minute period. The action in the second overtime would be played mostly in front of the Lady Bear’s goal. Co-Lin had great looks at the game winning goal, including a shot off the crossbar and another Lofton header that went just wide, but the Lady Bears defense held on to force the 2-2 tie after 110 minutes of action.

In men’s action the Wolves appeared to be in control of the match early. A goal by Eric Lima at the 26:00 minute mark came after extended action in front of the Bear’s goal. Eight minutes later the Bears would tie the match on a goal by Joel Villa off of the Ryan Richardson assist.

A penalty kick would give the Bears their first lead of the night five minutes into the second half. The PK came after a Co-Lin handball in the box and the kick was taken by Villa. Villa went low and beat Co-Lin goalkeeper Wesley Varner and Southwest had taken a 2-1 lead.

Southwest get two more goals in the second half, one by Chris Gomez and one by Landry Lofton, to give them the final margin of a 4-1 victory.

The Wolves and Lady Wolves return to action today. They travel to Decatur to take on the East Central Warriors in matches. The women begin at 2 and followed by the men at 4 p.m.
