Panthers crush South Jones

ELLISVILLE -The Brookhaven Panthers climbed back into the win column and snapped a three-game losing skid with a 54-14 triumph over the South Jones Braves in Region 3-5A football action Friday night.

“We talked all week about worrying about us,” said BHS coach Tommy Clopton. “Our players and coaches did a great job of going out there and putting them away early. Now we have to get ready to play a really talented and well coached Natchez team.”

The Panthers (5-3, 1-3) came out and quickly took care of business in the first half by overwhelming the Braves (1-7, 0-4) with a 48-0 explosion on the scoreboard.

In the first quarter, senior Shuntez Smith sparked Brookhaven with a 63-yard sprint to paydirt. Jonathan Martinez finished six-of-eight on the extra point kicks.

Ken Boyd punched in the Panthers’ second scoring drive with a five-yard touchdown run. Smith helped the Panthers post their third touchdown on a 25-yard reception from senior quarterback Fred Trevillion. Tre McDaniel capped off Brookhaven’s last scoring drive in the first quarter with a one-yard plunge into the end zone.

In the second quarter, Ole Brook continued the Panthers’ offensive scoring onslaught as McDaniel scrambled in on a 19-yard touchdown run.

Sophomore linebacker Dedric Smith managed to get the Ole Brook defense in the scoring frenzy with 65-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown.

Senior running back Jonathan Stepney continued to help the Panthers increase their lead with a 78-yard jolt to paydirt. At the half, Ole Brook commanded a 48-0 lead over South Jones.

In the second half, the Panthers turned off the scoring frenzy and relied on their smash-mouth defense to keep the Braves in check.

In the third quarter, Brookhaven’s sophomore linebacker Greg Watts provided the final stamp on the Panthers’ scoring explosion with a 35-yards fumble return to paydirt.

The Braves finally managed to get on the scoreboard late in the third quarter and broke up the scoreless streak when LaShawn Kelly punched in a five-yard touchdown run. Hunter Lawrence was a perfect two-of-two on the extra point kicks for South Jones.

The Braves cashed in their final touchdown in the fourth quarter as Kelly scramble in for a nine-yard run.

Offensively, Trevillion paced the Panthers, completing three-of-seven passes for 104 yards. He also had 47 yards rushing on two carries

Stepney led Ole Brook’s ground attack with 78 yards rushing on one carry. McDaniel contributed 53 yards on seven carries.

Shuntez Smith was the top receiver for the Panthers with two catches for 72 yards. Jermone Kelly caught a pass for 32 yards.

LaShawn Kelly was the offensive leader for the Braves with 23 carries for 125 yards.

Ethan Laird helped the Braves’ aerial attack, completing four-of-six passes for 29 yards. Hunter Lawrence had three catches for 27 yards.

Defensively, Ty Hill directed the Panthers with seven tackles, one sack and a force fumble. Kardale Clark provided six stops and had one sack. Leo Lewis helped with four tackles. Detric Smith and Greg Watts recovered a fumble each and return them for touchdowns.

Brookhaven visits Natchez for another tough region test against the Natchez Bulldogs. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
