Harold Gary is just one of the Brookhaven residents that believes the Homeseekers Paradise sign at the intersection of West Cherokee Street and South Whitworth Avenue has been in desperate need of some restoration for years now.

“The sign is one of the first things visitors to Brookhaven see. It’s a shame that it’s been in such bad shape,” Gary said.

Believing this sentiment is one shared by much of the Brookhaven community, Gary took it upon himself to make sure something was done about it.

Acting out of concern for Brookhaven’s public image, Gary played the role of city advocate, and presented his concern to bank presidents in the city. After getting funds from five area banks and businesses – including First Bank, Dickerson and Bowen, the Bank of Brookhaven, Trustmark and State Bank – Gary’s plea has paid off.

The restoration of the Brookhaven sign will be the first of its kind since 1991, according to Gary.

The sign will look new again, and will be completely painted over by Sunday afternoon, according to Gregg Woodcox, who was putting on an initial coat of paint all day Saturday.
