Loyd Star drains Cathedral

The Loyd Star Hornets and Lady Hornets secured a sweep over the Natchez Cathedral Green Wave in basketball action Friday night at Loyd Star gymnasium.
Loyd Star will have the rest of the week off to enjoy the Thanksgiving Break before returning to action Tuesday, Dec. 3, on the road to visit Vicksburg and battle the St. Aloysius Flashes for four games. Junior high action begins at 4 and 5 p.m., followed by the varsity games.
Loyd Star 51, Cathedral 34
Hanna Dickerson and Jordan Shelby were the offensive leaders for the Lady Hornets (4-2) with 14 points apiece. Dickerson paced Loyd Star on the boards with seven rebounds. Shelby contributed six rebounds, three steals and two block shots.
“The girls played a good game,” said Loyd Star coach Gene ‘Moochie’ Britt. “We are playing good team ball and it showed Friday night. Overall, I was pleased with their effort, but we still need to continue improving each and every game.”
McKenzie Milligan was the top scorer for the Lady Green Waves with 10 points.
Loyd Star 68, Cathedral 53
The Hornets (4-1) provided a offensive show and surfed the Green Wave to take a 41-17 lead into halftime and cruise to the win.
Edrick Alsworth pumped in a team-high double-double of 23 points and 12 rebounds to lead three Loyd Star players in double figures. Caleb Yarborough chipped in 12 points, seven steals and seven assists. Levi Redd had 13 points, four rebounds, five assists and three steals.
“The guys played a great game,” said Britt. “I was pleased to give everyone some playing time. It was a good team effort, but we still need to continue getting better.”
James Coley paced the Green Wave’s offense with a game-high 29 points.
