WESSON – The Copiah-Lincoln basketball teams will return from the Thanksgiving break and begin the December portion of their schedule when they host the Delta Trojans for two games on Monday, Dec. 2.
Coach Gwyn Young and his Lady Wolves (3-2) will be looking for revenge against a Delta team that beat them in shocking fashion on the opening night of the season. In that game, Co-Lin held a three point lead with only three seconds remaining in regulation. A technical foul called against Co-Lin, two made free throws by Delta, and a lay-up at the buzzer were enough to give Delta a 79-78 victory.
Since that game, Co-Lin has rebounded to win three out of their last four games, including a 58-30 win at Bishop State in their last game on Nov. 21. In the win over Bishop State, the Lady Wolves held the Lady Wildcats to 10 second-half points after only leading by five at halftime.
For the season, Co-Lin is led in scoring by freshman guard Claresa Banks. The Forest Hill High product is averaging 16.8 points per game. Sophomores Jessica Wilson and Ashley Minor are also averaging double figures. Wilson, a forward from Hattiesburg, averages 11.6 and Minor, a guard from Natchez, averages 11.4.
For coach Kenny Bizot and the Wolves (1-4), this has been a season of close calls and near misses as the young and inexperienced team has battled in the uber-tough MACJC.
The four losses suffered by Co-Lin have been by six, four, seven, and three point margins. The Wolves suffered a 63-57 loss at Delta on Nov. 4.
Sophomore guard Chris Steverson, averaging 17.4 points per game, is the only Wolf averaging double figures through five games. Steverson had a career high of 35 points, including going 9-for-10 from the 3-point line, in the Wolves 86-77 win over Delgado on Nov. 14.
The month of December will feature the final four games of the 2013 portion of the Co-Lin basketball season. After playing host to Delta on Monday, Co-Lin will open MACJC South Division play with a trip to Gulf Coast on Thursday, Dec. 5. The Wolves and Lady Wolves will host their final home game of the calendar year when division foe Jones County comes to Wesson on Monday, Dec. 9. After a break for exams, Co-Lin will cap 2013 with a trip to Delgado on Saturday, Dec. 14.
Tip off for the Lady Wolves versus Delta is set for 6 p.m. with the men’s game to follow. Both games will be streamed live at www.colinathletics.com or listen at WMJU 104.3 FM in Brookhaven.
