Funeral services for Melvin Applewhite of Monticello are 1 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 30, at Riverwood Family Funeral Service with burial in New Salem Baptist Church Cemetery.

Visitation is Monday from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Riverwood Family Funeral Service.

Mr. Applewhite, 84, died Dec. 27, 2013, at Lawrence County Nursing Home. He was born on May 28, 1929, to Edward A. Applewhite and Nora Smith Applewhite.

He was a retired truck driver with Trans State Oil Company and Halliburton. He was born and raised in Franklin County and was a member of New Salem Baptist Church in McCall Creek, where he served in many capacities and loved helping others. When he moved to Monticello, he was very active in Monticello Methodist Protestant Church along with his wife.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mildred Fortenberry Applewhite; two infant children; sister, Hilda Sweeney; and brothers, Harold Applewhite and Alton Applewhite.

He is survived by his wife, Annette Applewhite; sons, David E. Applewhite and Richard Price and wife, Christi; daughters, Lisa Taylor, Shari Mancuso and husband, Nic, Jennifer Watson and husband, Jon and Leisa Rintala and husband, Rick; brothers, Donald Applewhite and wife, Frankie and Glen Applewhite and wife, Peggy; sisters, Marinell Applewhite, Helen Ketterinham, Edith Dunigan and Carolyn Smith; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
