West Lincoln splits with Wesson

WESSON – The Wesson Lady Cobras and the West Lincoln Bears secured victories Tuesday night in a non-divisional contest at the Snake Pitt.
In the girls’ game, The Lady Cobras controlled the scoreboard in a close low scoring contest to claim a 25-21 victory over the West Lincoln Lady Bears.
In boys’ action, the West Lincoln Bears outplayed the Cobras in an aggressive game to come out on top 70-57.
West Lincoln will have their first test in Region 7-2A as they prepare to host the Bassfield Yellow Jackets at home Friday night with varsity girls’ action starting at 6 p.m. and varsity boys at 7:30 p.m.
The Cobras will also begin their first run in Region 7-3A play at home again Friday night against the Jefferson County Tigers. The varsity girls begin play at 6 p.m. followed by the boys at 7:30 p.m. at the Wesson Gymnasium.
Wesson 25 West Lincoln 21
Sophomore Jashia Smith led the Lady Cobras with a total of eight points. Smith was also the top defensive player with a total of eight rebounds. Freshman Tashay Glasper averaged seven points which included one three pointer and two steals. The Lady Cobras were 12/21 in free throw action.
West Lincoln senior, Destiny Allen, topped the Lady Bears list with a point total of 14, two of which were three pointers. Allen was also the top defensive player with seven rebounds. The Lady Bears were 8/9 in free throw action.
Coach Rusty Newman reflected on the win saying, “It was a rough night offensively for both teams. We had too many careless turnovers and missed too many lay ups. Defensively, I thought we played well. We put a lot of pressure on them upfront and that seemed to bother them. I’m proud of the girls for fighting the whole game and getting the win.”
Wesson 57 West Lincoln 70
Cobra sophomore Anthony Jones led the night with 16 points, which included three 3 point shots and three rebounds. Junior Farrod Green was the top rebounder with eight rebounds and a point total of 10. The Cobras were 5/7 in free throws.
“Defensively, I thought we played well early, but after halftime, West Lincoln made a run on us and we got frustrated. Once we get frustrated, we have a tendency to shut down and play lazy.” He continued,”We have to do a better job of playing hard the entire game regardless of the situation. Hats off to west Lincoln, they are a good team. They made the plays they needed to make to win the game. We have to regroup and get ready for district play on Friday.”
The Bears top scorer was junior Duane Marshall with an impressive 28 points, which included two 3-point shots. Marshall was also 100 percent on the free throw line. Senior Sam Bivens was the Bears top rebounder and also scored 12 points. Sophomore Ronnie Edwards also scored 12 points, which included two 3 point shots. The Bears had an average of 12/15 in free throw action.
Wesson Coach Rusty Newman stated, “Offensively we missed too many lay ups in the first half. We had numerous attempts to score easy baskets and we just could not get them to go.
West Lincoln Coach Lane Young commented on the win by saying, “I think both teams played with a lot of intensity tonight. Wesson has a very scrappy bunch and they will do well in their division. We need to keep improving and be ready for our first division game this Friday against Bassfield.”
In junior high action, West Lincoln sweeps Wesson.
The West Lincoln Lady Bears defeated the Wesson Lady Cobras 32-16. Jana Case led the Lady Bears with 16 points. Destiny Vaughn was the top scorer for the Lady Cobras with five points.
The Bears knocked off the Cobras 35-30. Landon Lunch and LeDarrius Jones directed the Bears with 11 points apiece. Brian Thomas was the offensive leader for Wesson with 15 points.
The junior high Bears and Lady Bears will be in tournament action Thursday at Loyd Star. West Lincoln battles Bogue Chitto at 4 p.m. for the girls and 5 p.m. for the boys.
