Brookhaven Academy dominates Central Hinds

RAYMOND – The Brookhaven Academy Cougars and Lady Cougars captured two huge district 5-AA victories over the Central Hinds Cougars Friday night in MAIS basketball action.

In the girls’ game, the Lady Cougars surpassed Central Hinds to claim a 34-25 victory.

In boys’ action, BA clobbered the Raymond-based Cougars 67-51.

Brookhaven Academy returns to action Tuesday as they prepare to host their district rival, the Amite School Center Rebels, for four games. The junior varsity girls’ tip off at 4 p.m. The varsity girls will start at 6 p.m., followed by the boys.

Brookhaven Acad. 34, Central Hinds 25 

The BA Lady Cougars outscored the Central Hinds Lady Cougars 26-14 in the second half en route to a 34-25 conference 5AA victory Friday night in Raymond.

After making just one three-point shot in the first half, the Lady Cougars dropped three quick treys from downtown in the third quarter to stretch the lead and never allowed Central Hinds back within seven points.

“We came out sluggish tonight and were fortunate not to be down by a larger margin than we were in the first quarter,” said BA head coach Mack Gardner.

“We have to focus better and be ready to play from the opening tip every time we step on the floor.”

Madison Warren and Hillary Wilson led the Lady Cougars with nine points each on the night. Lindsey Winborne chipped in five points toward the BA cause.

Mary Beth Hall led Central Hinds with 16 points in the contest.

Brookhaven Acad. 67, Central Hinds 51 

The Cougars (14-4, 2-0) remain undefeated in their district race as they roared past Central Hinds.

In the opening quarter, BA and Central Hinds battled in a close contest as the Lincoln County-based Cougars claimed a slim 12-11 lead.

In the second and third quarters, Brookhaven Academy managed to gain the upper hand on Central Hinds, outscoring the Raymond-based Cougars 34-19 to coast to the win,

Junior forward Peyton Hood pumped in a game-high 27 points and grabbed eight rebounds to spark the BA Cougars. Senior guard Zac Smith provided A double-double for Brookhaven Academy with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Travis Thornton chipped in with 12 points.

Peyton Banes was the top scorer for Central Hinds with 14 points. Trae Muse and Josh Banes provided 11 points apiece. Muse was the leader on the boards with eight rebounds.
