BA splits with Bowling Green

FRANKLINTON, La. – The Brookhaven Academy Cougars and Bowling Green Lady Buccaneers captured a split in MAIS basketball action Saturday night.

In the girls game, the top ranked AA classification and arguably the best overall squad in the MAIS, the Lady Buccaneers of Bowling Green flexed their muscles and overwhelmed the Lady Cougars 78-30.

In boys’ action, the Cougars overpowered Bowling Green with their strong offensive attack to claim a 44-29 victory.

Brookhaven Academy is back at home today for four games where they will face the Rebels of Amite School Center in District 5AA play. Junior High action will tip off at 4 p.m. Varsity action is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. for the girls, followed by the boys.

Bowling Green 78, Brookhaven Acad. 30 

The Lady Bucs posted 29 points in the first quarter and never looked back en-route to the victory.

“They are a great team that can go 10 deep on the bench without any drop off,” said BA head coach Mack Gardner. “Despite the score, our girls played hard and outside of the first four minutes of the game, we handled their press much better.”

Mary Claire White led the Lady Cougars with 8 points on the night.

Melissa Crowe directed the Lady Bucs offense with 16 points.

Brookhaven Acad. 44, Bowling Green 29 

The Cougars and Bucs provided their basketball fans with a strong offensive and defensively show as the both teams fought hard. After two quarters of action, the Cougars lead at the half 21-18.

In the second half, Brookhaven Academy’s offense came out on fire and hammered the Buccaneers 23-11 to secure the win.

Senior guard Zac Smith led the offensive charge for BA with 16 points. Junior forward Peyton Hood paced the Cougars on the boards with 11 rebounds.

KJ Robertson was the top scorer for the Bucs with a team-high double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds. Connor McCain also chipped in a double-double performance with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
