The Loyd Star Hornets and Lady Hornets captured a huge district victory over Bassfield Friday night in Region 7-1A basketball action at Loyd Star gymnasium.

In the girls’ contest, the Lady Hornets were victorious 47-33 over the Bassfield Lady Yellowjackets.

In boys’ action, Loyd Star clobbered Bassfield 63-46.

Loyd Star returns to action Tuesday as they prepare to visit their Lincoln County and Region rival Enterprise for a four-game series. The junior varsity girls will begin at 4 p.m., followed by the JV boys game at 5. The varsity girls are set to start at 6 p.m., followed by the boys at 7:30 p.m.

Loyd Star 47, Bassfield 33 

The Lady Hornets came out strong in the first half to claim a 28-10 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Loyd Star managed to hold off Bassfield’s attack as the Lady Yellowjackets outscored the Lady Hornets 23-19 to secure their first district win.

Marcey Givens was the offensive leader for the Lady Hornets (9-8, 1-2) with 16 points. Jordan Shelby contributed 13 points and Hannah Dickerson added 11 points.

“We probably played our best game of the year against Bassfield,” said Loyd Star coach Gene “Moochie” Britt. “Defensively, we played extremely well. Overall I was pleased with the girls’ effort.”

Jolissa Fairley was the top scorer for Bassfield with 13 points.

Loyd Star 63, Bassfield 46 

The Hornets and Yellowjackets battled in a close first quarter as Loyd Star managed to hold a slim 15-13 lead.

In the second and third quarters, the Hornets blasted Bassfield 35-15 to carry a 50-28 lead into the fourth quarter and cruise to the win.

Brad Jasper sparked the Hornets (12-4, 1-2) with 18 points. Edrick Alsworth provided a double-double performance with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Levi Redd chipped in 13 points.

“We played really well offensively and defensively,” said Britt. “We managed to shut down Bassfield’s top shooters with our defense and shot the ball well offensively. Overall, this was a great team effort. Overall, I was very please with the guys’ effort.”

Xzavier Harper was the offensive leader for Bassfield with 11 points. Jamal Peters added nine points.

In junior varsity boys action,  Bassfield clipped Loyd Star 52-50.

Mason Sims paced the Yellowjackets with 10 points. Javion Bears scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Hornets.
