Lawrence Co. splits with South Pike

MONTICELLO-Lawrence County and South Pike split a Division 7-4A basketball double-header Tuesday night at LCHS.

In girls’ action, Janice Felder’s Lady Eagles made a late comeback to grab a 53-49 win over the Lady Cougars. In the boys’ game, Pat Bridges’ Cougars prevailed, 77-71.

In the boys’ game, Lawrence County exploded for 28 first quarter points and led throughout, only to see South Pike grab a 66-65 lead with 3:50 left on the clock. After that, however, LCHS went on a 9-0 run to regain control of the game.

“It was a really good win for us,” Bridges said. “South Pike has a good team. We knew they would battle back, but we were able to weather the storm. Our guys kept their cool in crunch time. I liked the way we finished.”

Gabriel Lewis led Lawrence County with 19 points and 4 assists. He hit 5 of 6 free throws in the fourth quarter. As a team, the Cougars hit 13 of 19 free throws in the period. Phillip Moore added 16 points and 8 rebounds. Keith Davis had a big night with 14 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists. Gaylon Pittman also had 14, and Keyshawn Feazell had 11 points and 5 assists.

Desmond Cook led South Pike with 20 points. JaMorris Shaw had 16.

Lawrence County improved to 7-13 overall, and 3-1 in Division 7-4A play. Joe Taylor’s Eagles fell to 13-6 overall, and 2-1 in the division.

Lawrence County also led the girls’ game for most of the night, but Janice Felder’s Lady Eagle ended the game on an 11-0 run to snare the victory. Nakaylis Washington and Kaletron Baker spurred the South Pike comeback, each scoring 8 points in the decisive fourth quarter.

Baker led the Lady Eagles with 15 points, and Washington added 12. Destiny Gordon also netted double figures with 10. South Pike improved to 16-5 overall, and 3-0 in the division.

Latasha Rhodes led the Lady Cougars with 12 points, and Nikedra Brown added 10. Zipporah Baylis and Brown each pulled down 6 rebounds. Deneisha Dickson drew 3 charging fouls for the LCHS defense. Vicki Rutland’s Lady Cougars fell to 6-17 overall, and 3-1 in Division 7-4A play.

In girls’ junior varsity action, Lawrence County won by a 23-8 score. Shayla Kees had 8 points.

Lawrence County travels to North Pike on Friday. South Pike will play at McComb.
