Wesson slips past Hazlehurst; girls fall

WESSON – The Wesson Cobras and the Hazlehurst were victorious in Region 7-3A play Tuesday night.
In the girls’ game, the Lady Cobras fell to the Lady Indians in a disappointing 54-36 loss.
In boys’ action, the Wesson Cobras defeated the Indians in a close game with a final score of 77-67.
Wesson returns to action Friday night as they welcome the Franklin County Bulldogs to the Snake Pit for the last home game. The junior varsity boys will start at 5 p.m. Varsity action begins at 6 p.m. for the girls and the boys play at 7:30 in the Wesson Attendance Center Gymnasium. The senior basketball players will be recognized for Senior Night during the break between the girls’ and boys’ game.
Hazlehurst 54, Wesson 36
The Lady Cobras lost to the Lady Indians Tuesday night in a hard 54-36 loss in district play.
Top Lady Cobra player, senior Brandi McInnis, scored a total of 11 points which included two 3 pointers and provided 4 assists, 1 steal and 4 rebounds. Junior Kayla Britt was top defender with a total of 6 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists and scored 6 points, which included two 3 pointers. The Lady Cobras were 12/20 in free throw action with Britt and sophomore Jashia Smith averaging 100% from the line. Smith scored a total of 8 points and had 2 rebounds.
For the Lady Indians, the top player of the game was Roddreka Adams who topped the scoreboard with 21 points. The Lady Indians were 3/9 in free throw action.
Wesson coach Rusty Newman reflected on the loss by commenting, “I thought we played well in the first half. The second half was a different story. It seemed like we just lost our focus and made careless mistakes over and over again. I hope we can bounce back and play better Friday. ”
Wesson 77, Hazlehurst 67
The Wesson Cobras beat the Hazlehurst Indians in district play Tuesday night with a final score of 77-67.
Top Cobra players included juniors Tyler Christmas and Dartavious Dixon. Christmas scored 21 points and had 4 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 assist. Dixon contributed 20 points and had 6 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 assist. Top rebounder for the Cobras was junior Farrod Green with a total of 17 rebounds, 1 steal, 3 assists and a point total of 8. The Cobras were 24/33 in free throws.
Dedric Reese was the offensive leader for the Indians with 16 points. Reginald Jones netted 15 points. The Indians had an average of 15/21 in free throw action.
“The guys showed up and played well tonight.” said Wesson coach Rusty Newman. “We stuck to our game plan and played well as a team. Hazlehurst is a very athletic team but I thought we did a great job of handling their pressure. We also did a great job of rebounding the ball. I’m proud of the guys for playing hard and getting this much needed win. I hope this will get us back on track and we can continue playing this way.”
