He graduated from Hazlehurst High School and Mississippi State University. At MSU he earned a degree in math and agriculture. He served in the Mississippi National Guard. He spent several years working for the Mississippi Motor Vehicle Comptroller, but most of his working life was spent running his bulldozers, moving houses and house trailers, general forestry and land work.

Some of his favorite pastimes were playing his trumpet at the church he loved, writing his column for the Copiah County Courier, and riding his motorcycle and four-wheeler. Talking and visiting with both old and new friends gave him much pleasure.

Preceding him in death were his father and mother, Troy Albert and Hallie

Mae McAtee Funchess, and youngest son, Byron Terry Funchess.

He is survived by son, Thomas Albert Funchess of Hazlehurst and Houston, Texas; and cousins, Dorothy McAtee Harrell of Hazlehurst, William Graeber McAtee, of Lexington, Ky., and Cliff McAtee of Westminster Colo.
