Shelton State sweeps Lady Wolves

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Shelton State Lady Bucs sweep a doubleheader from the Co-Lin Lady Wolves 4-2 in the opener and 12-0 in the nightcap. The Lady Wolves take on West Georgia Tech, Central Alabama, and Southern Union in day two of the Shelton State Tournament on Saturday.

Lady Bucs 4, Lady Wolves 2 

Shelton jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Kate Benton drew a lead off walk and advanced to third on an error. Benton scored on a Laken Hancock groundout.

The Lady Wolves tied the game at 1-all in the top of the third inning. With two outs, Adrienne Wallace walked. Shortstop Savannah Johnston tripled to center to score Wallace.

Shelton answered with one run of its own in the bottom of the inning. Benton reached on an error, stole second and scored on back-to-back Co-Lin errors.

In the top of the fourth, the Lady Wolves tied the game at 2-all. Hannah Roberts led off the inning with a double to center field. Kayla Craft’s single to center plated Roberts.

Savannah Smith’s lead-off home run to center field in the bottom of the fourth put the Lady Bucs up 3-2.

Shelton would add an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning to go up 4-2.

The Lady Wolves committed five errors and out hit the Lady Bucs seven to four in the game.

Alyssa Clayton got the win in relief for the Lady Bucs. She pitched 1.2 scoreless innings allowing one hit, walking two and striking out two. Starter Meagan Young gave up two runs on six hits, striking out three and walking four in 5.1 innings.

Absorbing the loss was Brooke Gonzales. She scattered four hits, allowed four runs (two earned), walked three and struck out four in six innings.

Smith led the Lady Bucs at the plate with a solo home run and a single. Benton and Ashleigh Short added a single apiece.

For the Lady Wolves, Johnston led the way with a triple and a single. Craft added a pair of singles. Roberts doubled. Also hitting safely were Breanna McKenzie and Kacie Berry.

Lady Bucs 12, Lady Wolves 0 

In game 2, pitcher Morgan Yates pitched a two-hit shutout and the Lady Bucs pounded out 12 hits on their way to a 12-0 win in five innings.

The Lady Bucs took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a 2-run home run by Haley Adams. They added five runs in the third, a single run in the fourth and four runs in the fifth.

Freshman Rheagan Welch took the loss for Co-Lin. She allowed seven runs (six earned) on six hits, walked one and struck out none in 2.2 innings. Meghan Johnson threw 1.1 innings allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits and struck out one. Payton Sheffield pitched an inning giving up one run on two hits and striking out one.

Adams led Shelton at the plate going 3-for-4 with a home run and pair of singles for four RBIs. Laken Hancock added a double and a single. Laken Harvey had a pair of singles for 3 RBIs. Kayla McLean doubled. Hitting safely were Kate Benton, Savannah Smith, Sydney Dishman, and Allie Garland.

For the Lady Wolves, Missy Romero doubled and Hannah Roberts singled.
