Reports of some accumulations of thin layers of ice on city and county bridges Tuesday morning led to efforts to place sand and salt on the affected roadway surfaces.
Roadway surfaces, especially near bridges, are expected to be slick into the early afternoon.
All bridges on Highway 84 and Interstate 55 are being considered a potential hazard for drivers, according to Lincoln County Emergency Management Director Clifford Galley.
“The roads and bridges should be in better shape by this afternoon. In the meantime, I advise caution,” Galley said Tuesday morning.
City bridges have been affected as well, including the Industrial Park Road bridge.
A Brookhaven city street department official confirmed Tuesday morning that city work crews were out dropping sand and salt on city roadway surfaces.
Lincoln County remained under a winter weather advisory until noon Tuesday.
Temperatures are expected to raise above freezing sometime after noon, according to the National Weather Service.
The Lincoln County School District, Brookhaven School District and Brookhaven Academy have not made any changes to school schedules at this time. They are, however, monitoring the situation closely, say school officials.
The Mississippi Department of Transportation was unavailable for comment due to the work overload.
