McCOMB – The Lawrence County Cougars defeated the McComb Tigers 12-2, in 5 innings, in Friday evening Division 7-4A baseball, at Rotary Field. The Cougars took control of the game with a 7-run second inning, and finished the Tigers off with 4 more runs in the fifth.
With the win, Cory Keyes’ Cougars improved to 9-5 overall, and 2-2 in Division 7-4A play. McComb, coached by Ronald Hines, fell to 6-6 overall, and 0-4 in the division. Lawrence County won the opener in the home-and-home series with McComb on Tuesday night.
In the top of the first Kody Smith’s sacrificed fly staked the Cougars to a 1-0 lead. LCHS erupted for 7 runs in 4 hits in the second, the biggest blow being a 2-run single by shortstop T-Tez Cole. In the fifth, Smith’s bases-loaded 2-run single was the big hit in a 4-run rally.
Smith, Will Jackson and Gabriel Lewis led Lawrence County with 2 hits each. Cole, Kasey Durr, Kewaun May and Marcus Atterberry also had hits. All 10 Cougar hits were singles.
While Cougar batters were piling up hits and runs, Lawrence County hurler Logan Greenlee was having a pretty smooth time of it. He allowed a run on a Ladarious Young RBI single in the third, and an unearned run in the fourth. Greenlee gave up 4 hits and struck out 7 in 5 innings.
Young led the Tigers with 2 hits. Marquel Carroll and Rachard Brown also had hits. JaMarcus Johnson started on the mound for the Tigers. Jemiah Anderson pitched well in relief before tiring in the fifth inning.
“We held serve in this series,” said Cougar coach Cory Keyes. “We needed to win these two games against McComb, and we did. Logan did a good job, and we got some timely hits.”
Keyes’ Cougars headed to Vicksburg for Saturday evening games with the host Vicksburg Gators and Natchez Cathedral. Results of those games were not available at press time.
