WESSON – It isn’t every day that a school can claim to have knocked off the No. 1 team in the country, but that was the case for the Copiah-Lincoln baseball team on Saturday.

The Wolves used 23 hits in an 18-10 win over No. 1 Jones. In game two, it was the Jones bats who did the most damage, posting 19 hits of their own, in a 14-5 Bobcat win.

Co-Lin 18, Jones 10 

The Bobcats held a 9-2 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth and looked like a team that was on cruise control. The Wolves (12-32, 8-16) exploded for four runs in the sixth, two runs in the seventh and 10 runs in the eighth inning.

Co-Lin freshman outfielder Adrian Brown was a catalyst at the plate for the home team. Brown went 6-for-6 with seven RBI’s. He had four singles, a double, and a homerun. Mitch Little and Colby Whitfield also had homeruns for Co-Lin.

The Bobcats’ (38-8, 18-6) pitching staff came into the game with some of the most impressive stats in the nation. The Bobcats used five pitchers in the game, with Will Simon taking the loss. The visitors used three different pitchers before getting out of the big eighth inning by Co-Lin. Reliever Cole Barlow came into the game with only one run given up and two hits against him in 12 appearances this season. The Wolves chased the sophomore right hander after scoring four runs on three hits against him.

Freshman Wesley Watts picked up the win in relief after going two innings and surrendering one run on three hits. Watts, who played the first seven innings at second base, had two singles and two RBI’s at the plate.

Of the 24 Co-Lin hits, six of them were doubles. Dominic Savage, Philip Lott, Brown, Whitfield, and Little (2) all hit doubles for the Wolves.

“This was a crazy game,” said Co-Lin head coach Clay Smith. “Proud of how our guys stayed focused and battled and made that big inning happen.”

Jones 14, Co-Lin 5 

Game two was tougher sledding for the Wolves as they faced freshman left handed ace Lane Ratliff. Ratliff gave up all five runs in a shaky second inning before settling down and striking out 11 to gain the win.

Adrian Brown had a two RBI single for the Wolves. The only other Co-Lin hits were singles by Dominic Savage, Ryan Young and Choc Hubbard.

“Ratliff was tough. Once he settled in we had a hard time getting anything going,” said Smith. The Purvis product was pitching in front of multiple MLB scouts and is expected to be drafted in the upcoming professional draft.

The Wolves honored sophomore Diamond Dolls and other players before the beginning of game one. Sophomores suiting up in their final game for Co-Lin on Saturday were Dominic Savage, Phillip Lott, Dylan Anglin, Ryan Young, Konner Burke, Corey Funk, Mitch Little and Casey Hurley.
