Laurel Christian Lions win South State; BA will battle in four events for State gold

DAILY LEADER / MARTY ALBRIGHT / Brookhaven Academy Marlee Watts returns a serve in Girls No. 1 Doubles tennis action Wednesday at Brookhill.

The Laurel Christian School Lions took home two MAIS South State AA titles in tennis action Wednesday at Brookhill, The Lion netters won the boys title with 11 points and the girls with 10 points; outdistancing ACCS with 6 1/2 points in the boys category. BA finished with 6 points in the girls’ category.

BA won three event titles in the full day of individual tennis action at Brookhill and qualified for the MAIS State Tournament. The events were: the No. 1 Boys Singles: Grant Melancon who defeated McNamara (Hartfield) 6-2, 6-0 and Pitts (Laurel Christian) 6-0, 6-2.

Both of BA’s girls’ doubles advance to State. No. 1 Girls Doubles: Madison Warren/Marlee Watts defeated Howell/King (Simpson) 6-0, 6-1 and Fisher/Napier (Laurel Christian) 6-0, 6-2.

In No. 2 Girls Doubles action, Lindsey Winborne/Macey Lea defeated Hatten/Mouton (Hartfield) 6-1, 6-0 and Tibbs/Carmichael (Laurel Christian) 6-2, 6-3.

Also qualifying for the state tournament was the No. 2 Boys Singles: Jacob Wiggins who def Scheider (Hartfield) 6-0 6-1 and lost to Leggett (Laurel Christian) 6-0 6-3.

Here is the remaining results of the south state action for Brookhaven Academy. No. 1 girl singles: Whitney Moak (BA) lost to Rounsaville (Laurel Christian) 3-6. 2-6. No. 2 girls singles: Missy Clanton (BA) lost to Hillhouse (Hartfield) 3-6, 1-6. No. 1 boys’ doubles: Trent Nettles/Peyton Hood (BA) lost to Chancellor/Danford ( Laurel Chr.) 4-6, 7-5, 1-6. No. 2 boys doubles: Zac Smith/Baylor Ray (BA) lost to Wolfe/Walter (Laurel Chr.) 6-2, 5-7, 6-10. Mixed doubles: Susanna Ratcliff/Gray Anding (BA) lost to Gatewood/Jones (Laurel Chr.) 0-6 0-6.

The MAIS State Championship will be in Jackson next Wednesday.
