Trojans slay Cobras’ season

FOXWORTH – The West Marion Trojans ended the Wesson Cobras baseball season Friday night as the Trojans defeated the Cobras 8-5 in Game Two to collect a two-game sweep over Wesson in Class 3A state playoff action
“We had a very good season overall,” said Wesson coach Seth Lofton. “The guys played hard all season long and in the playoffs, but we just came up short in this series. Overall, I am proud of the guys effort and I am looking forward to next season.”
The Cobras conclude their first season in the Class 3A ranks with a 12-14 record overall. Wesson did win the Region 7-3A baseball championship with a perfect 10-0 record in district action.

Both teams showed a little bit of sluggishness as they entered Game Two, after battling through a tough offensive contest Thursday night.
The Trojans managed to shake it off a little earlier in the first inning as they secured a 5-0 lead.
In the second inning, the Cobras charged back and cut into the West Marion lead by pushing across three runs to dig into the Trojans lead 5-3.
West Marion managed to increase their lead to 7-3 in the third inning, but the Cobras rallied back to cut it down again in the fourth inning to 7-5. However, the Cobras failed to come closer as the Trojans held off Wesson’s attack to claim the win.
Jaran Hollis was the winning pitcher for the Trojans with three strikeouts and two walks.
Tyler McLeod suffered the season ending setback on the mound for Wesson with five strikeouts, nine walks and one hit batter.
Justin Boone was the top hitter for the Cobras at the plate with a double and a single. Preston Middleton contributed a pair of singles. Jase Alexander, Austin Crow and Mack Smith hit safely.
Jacob Allen led West Marion’s offense with a double. Hitting safely were Jordan Jenkins, Jesse Pittman, Cord Blocker, Chandler McNabb and Jaran Hollis.
