Lincoln schools: Teachers, parents, retirees recognized

The accomplishments of outstanding parents, teachers and district retirees were recognized by the Lincoln County School Board earlier this week.

Retiring with 18 years from Bogue Chitto Attendance Center is Karen Yarborough, Leah Brister retired with 28 years teaching at Enterprise Attendance Center, Hugh Braxton with four years as janitor with Enterprise, Lora Hedgepeth has 28 years teaching at Loyd Star Attendance Center and Paula Myers has 25 years teaching at Loyd Star.

The district’s Teachers of the Year are: Julie Akins, Bogue Chitto, Kristy Cline, Enterprise, Katie Furr, Loyd Star and Belinda Spears of West Lincoln Attendance Center. Furr was selected as the district’s Teacher of the Year.

The district’s Parents of the Year are: Mary Jordan, Bogue Chitto, Patricia Jordan, Enterprise, David Flowers, Loyd Star and Hugh Mathis of West Lincoln. Patricia Jordan of Enterprise was the district Parent of the Year.

In other business board at Monday’s meeting, the school board:

• Approved the resignation of Seth Sumrall as a teacher at Loyd Star.

• Approved the 2014-15 salary schedule.

• Accepted the request of Jason Case to accept the donation from the Junior Auxiliary of Brookhaven in the amount of $350. This donation is to be used to purchase books and supplies for the West Lincoln library.

• Approved the request from Mickey Myers, principal at Bogue Chitto, to accept a donation of $750 from Entergy. This check is a donation for volunteer hours worked by Greg Ginn and will be used by the Bogue Chitto baseball program.

• Agreed to extend the application for Secondary Skills Programs/Teacher for a 40-day contract.

• Accepted the request from financial director Cheryl Shelby for permission to post a public notice for a budget hearing to be advertised June 3 and June 10 with the public hearing to be held on Monday, June 16. Additionally, that a special board meeting be held on June 26 to adopt the 2014-14 budget and the end of the year payments.

• Approved the request from federal programs director for permission to advertise for Title I, II and Special Education.

• Approved the request from child nutrition director Jeremy Berry to apply for the Winston Equipment Grant Program.

• Approved the request of Presley to compensate a parent for mileage to take her child to the Summit Health & Rehabilitation Center twice a week.

• Approved the supply list for all four schools for 2014-15 school year.

• Gave permission to Diane Crotwell to take student FBLA members to the national convention in Nashville. The students recently placed in state FBLA Competition and are going to compete at the convention on the national level.

• Approved Loyd Star counselor Renea Redd to teach dual enrollment courses, English Comp I, English Comp II and possibly Speech. The classes are sponsored by Copiah-Lincoln Community College.

• Gave teacher Janet Whittington permission to use school facilities at West Lincoln to teach beginning Art concepts to K-2 for Mother’s Day projects.

The next scheduled board meeting is at 5 p.m., Monday, May 19.
