The Brookhaven Board of Aldermen voted Tuesday night to extend the turn lane on Brookway Boulevard by Walgreens.
Mike McKenzie of WGK engineering proposed to the board to extend the turn lane just before the intersection of Brookway Boulevard and Highway 51 heading west. The extension would allow a safer left turn from the westbound Boulevard into Walgreens parking lot.
To avoid traffic with the Highway 51 intersection, the construction would also introduce a curb on the right side of the turn lane, preventing those exiting Walgreens from take a left-hand turn onto the Boulevard.
The board voted unanimously in favor of the traffic change.
Kenny Goza on behalf of the Brookhaven Housing Authority asked the board to approve the names of streets in the new Southview development. The names will be Buie Circle, Tanner Circle and Buchanan Circle, named after two Alexander High School principals and a coach. The board voted in favor.
Alderman-at-large Karen Sullivan announced that St. Francis would be placing a sign on their cemetery.
“All our cemeteries will have a sign,” Sullivan said.
Ward one alderman Randy Belcher thanked the water department for their prompt attention to a leak in the Brignal area during the stormy weather.
The board ended with an executive season in reference to contract negotiations and a personnel matter.
