After a successful effort by the Friends of the Library to get projection equipment installed, the Lincoln County Public Library will begin showing PG-13 movies.

Katherine Bumgarner said the group will spend some time deciding what days and times work best, but they hope to show a movie every week. She said at this point, they are targeting an adult audience, but if an interest arises, they may begin doing something after school for children.

She said the equipment is also available for groups wishing to view their own movies. The only requirement is that the movie must be on DVD, and the group should contact someone at the library ahead of time.

The equipment was purchased by the Friends of the Library through book sales and donations. The equipment cost more than $5,000, and Tommy Sproles was in charge of the installation. Melinda’s Fabrics/Interiors installed shades to allow the Vernon Room at the library to be darkened for better viewing.

Bumgarner said the group hopes to attract a variety of people and will show movies of varying interests. She said they also will accept requests. She hopes to show new movies, such as “Les Miserables,” and classics, such as “The Color Purple.”

“We’re trying to reach all kinds of people,” she said.

To kick things off, the first movie will be “The Blind Side,” showing at 1:30 p.m. Monday. Snacks will not be provided, but viewers may bring their own.

Based on the book, “The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game” by Michael Lewis, the movie shows how Michael Oher overcame an impoverished childhood to go on to play football at the University of Mississippi and the NFL thanks the love and support of his adopted parents, Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy, and their family.

Sandra Bullock received an Academy Award for her portrayal of Leigh Anne, and the movie was a Best Picture nominee.

To suggest a movie or for more information talk to any of the librarians or email Bumgarner at bumgarner1@bellsouth.net or Carole Bennett at cbenn6@aol.com. Future movies will be posted in The Daily Leader’s Calendar of Events.
